How to become a Somaiya student

The K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies offers MA programmes in Sanskrit, Pali, Yogashastra, Buddhist Studies, Jainology and Prakrit, Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology and China Studies. There is a focus on developing language skills and some programmes include visits to sites of heritage and workshops on skill development such as translation, epigraphy and meditation. Students can expect to build a strong foundation to undertake research in their areas of interest.

MA Yogashastra B.A. (Yogashastra) or Graduation from any other Discipline with Diploma in Yoga or equivalent course in Yoga with 500 marks or 200 hours of learning from a recognized institute. 55%

1. Students from disciplines other than Yoga possessing knowledge of Yoga may be considered for an interview.

2. Exceptional candidates with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

MA Pali B. A. in Pali or Graduate in any other discipline with Diploma in Pali OR Diploma in Pali Grammar. 55%

1. Students from disciplines other than Pali  possessing knowledge of the language may be considered for an interview.

2. Exceptional candidates with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

MA Buddhist Studies B. A. in Buddhist Studies or Graduate in any other discipline with Diploma in Buddhist Studies OR Diploma in Buddhist Sanskrit : Language and Literature. 55%

1. Students from disciplines other than Buddhist Studies possessing knowledge of the subject with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

2. Exceptional candidates with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

MA Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology B. A. in AIHC & Arch. or Graduate in any other discipline with Diploma in AIHC & Arch. 55%

1. Students from disciplines other than Ancient Indian History & Archaeology or History  possessing knowledge of the subject may be considered for an interview. 

2. Exceptional candidates with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

MA Jainology and Prakrit B. A. in Jainology or Graduate in any other discipline with Diploma in Jainology or Diploma in Prakrit Language and Literature. 55%

1. Students from disciplines other than Jainology and Prakrit possessing knowledge of the subject may be considered for an interview.

2. Exceptional candidates with a score lower than 55% may be considered, based on an interview.

MA Hindu Studies  Graduate in any discipline 55%

About Somaiya Vidyavihar University Entrance Test/ Interview for P G Programmes

For Academic Year 2026-27:

Somaiya Vidyavihar University will conduct interview to test eligiblty on case to case basis.

The interview is generally held online/offline, at our institution. 

Common University Entrance Test

Furthermore, applications for PG programmes are accepted through State Common Entrance Test (http://www.mahacet.org)
If a candidate has appeared for  the above-mentioned qualifying entrance exam, he/she should have cleared it and fill in the respective details in the marks section of the admission form.

Important Instructions

  • A provisional seat will be offered based on the merit, and availability of seats. The candidate will be communicated via email about his/her status of admission whether confirmed or waitlisted.
  • A candidate who has been offered a provisional seat will need to pay the full fees as applicable for the programme, within 8 days of the receipt of the offer letter, to secure the confirmed admission.
  • Candidate who does not pay the requisite amount as per the deadline will lose his/her claim on the confirmed seat during that phase.
  • Provisional admission needs to be confirmed within four working days of declaration of result of graduation or equivalent examinations, by paying the remaining balance of fees.
  • The final confirmation of admission is subject to physical verification of the documents. In case of non-availability of valid documents, the confirmation of the admission will result in cancellation.
  • Cancellation rules are available on the website for reference.
  • The admission schedule may change under unavoidable circumstances or as per directive / instructions from admitting authorities of Somaiya Vidyavihar University. The revised schedule, if any, will be notified on the website.

Academic Break

After commencement of the MA programme, if a student wants to take a break for certain valid reason, then he/she can do so as per the following norms :

The academic break can be granted to any student at most once during the programme, for the period of a semester or more, with the maximum period of academic one year. The application has to be approved by the Dean.

Eligibility for academic break:

  • Serious personal medical reasons involving hospitalization or serious family issues, on the condition of providing valid medical certificates or relevant documents.
  • Pregnancy/Maternity

The Dean will approve the academic break and forward the application of the student to the admission/ department for necessary process.

  • Payment of Fees for the academic break: If the student has informed the Dean regarding academic break before the commencement of the relevant year and not paid the total fees for that year, then if his/her academic break is granted, he/she can pay the total fee (100%) prevalent at that time when he seeks re-admission.
  • If a student wants to take academic break after the commencement of the academic year, but he/she has not attended the classes and if the fees are not paid, then while seeking readmission he/she has to pay the total fee (100%) plus 25% of the total fee as re-admission fee to continue his/her studentship.
  • If the student has paid the total fee for the entire year and then sought the academic break after commencement of that academic year in the middle of semester, he/she has to pay 25% of the total fee prevalent at that time, towards re-admission in subsequent years.
